Resources For Parents
Why music?
Studies show that children who have musical training show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to children with no musical training.
Music is inherently enjoyable. It allows for creativity and individual expression. Students involved in school music groups like choir, band, or orchestra learn cooperation and communication skills. In these groups, everybody plays and everybody’s part is important.
It has often been said that tomorrow’s problems will be solved not by people who know the most, but by people who can think the most creatively. The study of music, whether in a school band, orchestra, or choir, in a private lesson, or just for fun, is exactly the ticket for nurturing your child’s creativity and beginning them on a journey of satisfying musical expression that can last a lifetime.
Here is a collection of music resources for parents of musicians of any age.

| Footlight Dreams Features: For many young people, the most intense performing experiences they may have are as part of a cast in a musical or play. Or, they may fall in love with a Broadway or touring production to the extent that they jump headlong into the pursuit of such a dream without the necessary planning and thought that should accompany this big decision. Still, others may have more advanced training and background but holes remain in their knowledge of what it will take to be successful in the business. Veteran actor and educator David Ladd has created a practical guide for performers, teachers and parents to help the decision-making process for aspiring performers as they contemplate their futures in the theatre. Drawing on his experience as a singer/dancer/actor, including a sabbatical year in New York where he chronicled his challenges and successes, Ladd presents the full range of information a student would need before setting their sights on a music theatre career, including interviews from professional actors detailing the significant obstacles to success in the field, statistics on costs of housing, transportation and training, and the audition/casting process for a new, non-Equity performer. The final section of the book guides the reader as he/she explores their own career options, with thought-provoking questions, journaling opportunities and career resources, making this chapter especially useful for teachers working one-on-one with students or in the classroom. It's not an easy path, but if performing is your passion, pursue it with an open mind and listen to your heart - the successes can be glorious!

| Play Less Hurt Text Features: Making music at any level is a powerful gift. While musicians have endless resources for learning the basics of their instruments and the theory of music, few books have explored the other subtleties and complexities that musicians face in their quest to play with ease and skill. The demands of solitary practice, hectic rehearsal schedules, challenging repertoire, performance pressures, awkward postures, and other physical strains have left a trail of injured, hearing-impaired, and frustrated musicians who have had few resources to guide them. Playing Less Hurt addresses this need with specific tools to avoid and alleviate injury. Impressively researched, the book is invaluable not only to musicians, but also to the coaches and medical professionals who work with them. Everyone from dentists to orthopedists, audiologists to neurologists, massage therapists and trainers will benefit from Janet Horvath's coherent account of the physiology and psyche of a practicing musician. Writing with knowledge, sympathetic insight, humor, and aplomb, Horvath has created an essential resource for all musicians who want to play better and feel better. Table of Contents:

| Society And Musical Development Features: As renowned educator Edwin E. Gordon writes, "Music is considered a special mark of humanity." Indeed, our ability to make music helps to define what it is to be human. Yet the study of how we acquire musical skills, and the emphasis music has in our schools, is often given short shrift. Why In this remarkable book, Dr. Gordon imagines conversations about music and music learning from the perspective of composers and conductors, professors and deans, school music teachers...even the parent and the bureaucrat. In Dr. Gordon's view, everyone in our society has a role to play in the value we give music and musicianship. And yet as central as music is, the best of intentions sometimes result in the de-emphasis of music in our schools—another paradox. This illuminating book is a great step forward in understanding our own roles in the great paradoxes of music and music education. And only through understanding these roles can we hope to change society...and ourselves.
