Resources For Parents

Why music?

Studies show that children who have musical training show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to children with no musical training.

Music is inherently enjoyable.  It allows for creativity and individual expression.  Students involved in school music groups like choir, band, or orchestra learn cooperation and communication skills.  In these groups, everybody plays and everybody’s part is important.

It has often been said that tomorrow’s problems will be solved not by people who know the most, but by people who can think the most creatively.  The study of music, whether in a school band, orchestra, or choir, in a private lesson, or just for fun, is exactly the ticket for nurturing your child’s creativity and beginning them on a journey of satisfying musical expression that can last a lifetime.

Here is a collection of music resources for parents of musicians of any age.

Am I Musical Bk/CD
Features:

If you've ever wondered about the music potential of your child or yourself, the music audiation games are for you! No formal education is necessary.

These games are fun to play and, at the same time, objectively reveal a general estimate of musical potential of children and adults. Using the game sheets and a pencil, the participant listens to the included CD and answers questions about the music.

Use the games as a fun learning activity and to discover your musical strengths and weaknesses. Or give this game to a friend who insists (probably wrongly) that they have no musical talent!

Written by the world's foremost expert in the study of music aptitude and beautifully illustrated, this book makes a great gift for a friend or yourself.

Parents and expectant parents are the best teachers of unborn, newborn, and young children, followed by other relatives and music teachers. Gordon, perhaps the world's principal researcher and thinker in music education: * Describes appropriate early music guidance and clarifies trhough modeling how it can be put into play by parents and teachers. * Details in one document how to smoothly make the musical transition from preganancy to early childhood music to school music in a practical and valid manner. This resource is organized in six parts: 1) the introduction, 2) a guide for pregnant women, 3) instructions for parents and other adults, 4) suggestions for early childhood teachers and parents, 5) resources for elementary school music and classroom teachers, and 6) an explanation of relevant research and a summary of Dr. Gordon't Music Learning Theory. Footlight Dreams
Features:

For many young people, the most intense performing experiences they may have are as part of a cast in a musical or play. Or, they may fall in love with a Broadway or touring production to the extent that they jump headlong into the pursuit of such a dream without the necessary planning and thought that should accompany this big decision. Still, others may have more advanced training and background but holes remain in their knowledge of what it will take to be successful in the business. Veteran actor and educator David Ladd has created a practical guide for performers, teachers and parents to help the decision-making process for aspiring performers as they contemplate their futures in the theatre. Drawing on his experience as a singer/dancer/actor, including a sabbatical year in New York where he chronicled his challenges and successes, Ladd presents the full range of information a student would need before setting their sights on a music theatre career, including interviews from professional actors detailing the significant obstacles to success in the field, statistics on costs of housing, transportation and training, and the audition/casting process for a new, non-Equity performer. The final section of the book guides the reader as he/she explores their own career options, with thought-provoking questions, journaling opportunities and career resources, making this chapter especially useful for teachers working one-on-one with students or in the classroom. It's not an easy path, but if performing is your passion, pursue it with an open mind and listen to your heart - the successes can be glorious!

Music Learning Theory for Newborn And Young Children Text
Features:

This book is about the most critical learning period in every individual's musical life: birth to age five.

Written for early childhood teachers and interested parents, this is the most extensive book of its kind by perhaps the leading educator and researcher in music education. Professor Gordon shares insights and research from almost 20 years guiding young children in music learning.

Completely revised and updated, this new edition explains how young children learn to audiate and to develop an understanding of music-and how children should experience music as early as possible, in much the way they experience language.

Professor Gordon guides us in ways to motivate and encourage young children to audiate and how to teach music successfully at home and in preschool, with an emphasis on individual differences between children. New to this edition is a chapter on initiating and organizing a music preschool.

Music Listening Experiences Bk/CD
Features:

Listening in both music and language is fundamental, and newborn and young children engage in active listening as a critical first step in both language and music development.

This two-CD set and book is for adults who want to help a newborn or very young child with this critical first stage of music development. Music Listening Experiences is written and recorded by Edwin E. Gordon—internationally recognized as one of the world's principal thinkers and researchers in music education.

The two enclosed CDs, one tonal and the other rhythm, provide models for parents and caregivers looking to engage very young children with tunes and chants in a wide range of tonalities and meters. These children will begin to build a music vocabulary that can serve them for a lifetime.

This package includes a brief introduction by Dr. Gordon, CDs containing 200 tunes and rhythm chants without words (important for this early stage of music development), as well as complete notation for all of the music.

Dr. Gordon writes that the ability to audiate-to give meaning to music-is essential to all future music achievement. And this ability to audiate starts with building a strong and diverse musical vocabulary. Music Listening Experiences is an important tool for anyone who wants to build this musical vocabulary in our youngest children.

Play Less Hurt Text
Features:

Making music at any level is a powerful gift. While musicians have endless resources for learning the basics of their instruments and the theory of music, few books have explored the other subtleties and complexities that musicians face in their quest to play with ease and skill. The demands of solitary practice, hectic rehearsal schedules, challenging repertoire, performance pressures, awkward postures, and other physical strains have left a trail of injured, hearing-impaired, and frustrated musicians who have had few resources to guide them. Playing Less Hurt addresses this need with specific tools to avoid and alleviate injury. Impressively researched, the book is invaluable not only to musicians, but also to the coaches and medical professionals who work with them. Everyone from dentists to orthopedists, audiologists to neurologists, massage therapists and trainers will benefit from Janet Horvath's coherent account of the physiology and psyche of a practicing musician. Writing with knowledge, sympathetic insight, humor, and aplomb, Horvath has created an essential resource for all musicians who want to play better and feel better.
